First, the term “coil” refers to the spring unit inside a mattress.
These coils generally come in two main types: pocket coils and connected coils.
Each has its own characteristics and, naturally, provides a different feel when sleeping.
■ What is a “Pocket Coil”?
Pocket coils are individually wrapped coils, each enclosed in its own fabric pocket.
They operate independently, meaning that when one coil is compressed, it doesn’t affect the neighboring coils.
This design allows the mattress to better conform to the contours of your body, offering personalized support.
Additionally, when sleeping with a partner on a double or queen mattress, motion transfer is minimized — movements like turning over won’t disturb the person next to you.
■ What is a “Connected Coil”?
Connected coils are linked together with wire, forming a mesh-like structure when viewed from above.
They support your body as a whole unit rather than individually, resulting in a firmer overall feel.
The main structural difference is this:
Pocket coils support the body at individual points, while connected coils support the body across a continuous surface.
Even among mattresses using the same coil type, differences in coil thickness, length, connection method, and materials (such as steel composition) vary by manufacturer.
